The Commissary is offered by the Presidio Trust and award-winning chef Traci Des Jardins, in partnership with Bon Appétit Management Company. Its Spanish-influenced California cuisine is driven by sustainable, locally-sourced ingredients. It also features a mercantile with artisan goods, from batch jams to local cheeses, as well as bottles of wine.

It is located in the heart of the Presidio, and fittingly housed in the former mess hall of iconic streetscape known as the Montgomery Street Barracks. Built in 1895 and known colloquially as “infantry row,” the Barracks are adjacent to the beautiful Main Parade Ground.

The restaurant pairs authentic Presidio elements – such as lighting fixtures reclaimed from a historic Army gymnasium and Douglas Fir table tops fashioned from salvaged wood – with a comfortable, contemporary design. Most seating at The Commissary is communal. The restaurant also offers limited traditional and bar seating, dining on the shaded front porch,  and “front row” seating surrounding an open kitchen where guests can watch the chefs in action.

The Commissary is a destination unto itself or a wonderful place to enjoy a meal during a day in the park.

Born in Mexico City and raised in Los Angeles and Napa, Rogelio Garcia began his culinary career humbly, in high school as a dishwasher for a restaurant in Yountville. During stints at Napa’s Hurley and Angele, he spent his days off staging at Yountville’s Redd and San Francisco’s Michael Mina, until Angele’s Bettina Rouas recognized his desire to grow and helped him land a job at Cyrus in Healdsburg. Positions as Sous Chef at Calistoga Ranch and Chef de Partie at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry followed. When an opportunity arose to return to Angele as Executive Chef, Rogelio spent the next three years there creating classic dishes with a twist. As Executive Chef at The Commissary, in collaboration with Traci Des Jardins, he creates Spanish-influenced California cuisine inspired by the rich history of the Presidio. Inspired by The Commissary’s display kitchen, in late 2017 Rogelio began hosting a monthly Open Kitchen Chef Series featuring a rotating group of visiting guest chefs and culinary luminaries who focus on a single ingredient for a multi-course prix-fixe dinner.

Chef Des Jardins has been a force in the San Francisco food scene for more than two decades. She runs a diverse group of restaurants in San Francisco, including: Jardinière, Arguello, The Commissary, Mijita Cocina Mexicana, Public House and TRANSIT.

She is a dedicated philanthropist, sitting on the board of the local non-profit La Cocina, and has been a longtime supporter of the farm to table movement and sustainability. She has won numerous awards from national and local magazines and the James Beard Foundation.
